The President's Update on
Graduate Programs

(a letter released in the PWU community at the start of
2nd Trimester SY 2004-2005)

Dear PWU Masteral and Doctoral Students:

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Second Trimester SY 2004-2005 with my best wishes for another meaningful period in your advanced studies.

I am pleased to inform you that the PWU Graduate program was most satisfactorily rated GOOD by CHED-FAPE Evaluation Team which assessed, interalia, our curriculum, faculty line-up, teaching methodology, library resources and facilities.

In accordance with the pertinent provisions of Republic Act (RA) No. 7722, otherwise known as the "Higher Education Act of 1994", effective this Second Trimester SY 2004-2005, all PWU graduate programs have been vertically articulated. This means that the Dean of each academic department now exercises administrative and supervisory responsibilities over the pertinent graduate programs. The Director of Graduate School will exercise oversight function over comprehensive examinations and thesis/dissertation defense to ensure that common standards prevail in all fields of advanced study.

As part of the transition period this 2nd Trimester, the Deans of the different academic departments have been briefed on their responsibilities in a vertically articulated graduate program. Your student records are now being transferred to the relevant department of your respective field of study. This mean that effective October 18, you may consult with your respective Dean or his/her representative on matters and issues relative to your graduate courses. Registration for the Third Trimester and succeeding trimesters will be with the academic departments.

I am confident that under this vertical articulation arrangement of the graduate courses, you will begin to discern further enhancement of our efforts to give you a sharper academic focus in your field of advanced studies which is the underlying goal of R.A. No. 7722

The Chancellor, Vice-President for Academic Affairs, the OIC of the Office of the Assistant Vice-President for Academic Affairs, and the Deans will be prepared to address any questions you may have or need clarification on during your regular graduate students assembly, the dates of which you will be informed accordingly. Please accept my best wishes in your educational endeavors.

Sincerely yours,

DR. AMELOU BENITEZ REYES
University President
